SERVICES

The BSC testing laboratory can certify, re-check, or do an experimental on any biological stain based on your needs.  You can choose the service you require based on the following:

          BSC Service            Criteria

Certification A certification is chosen when the material has either been purchased from another company or manufactured in-house.  The current material has not been certified by the Biological Stain Commission and does not have a current BSC dye code number in the form of CD-#  (where C is the company designation, D is the dye designation and # is the batch of the CD combination).  The certification process will generate a BSC dye code for this batch and a certificate of analysis if the material passes our criteria.

Two dyes have recently been added to the BSC's list of certifiable stains: nuclear fast red and sirius red F3B. Both are in widespread use as stains in pathology and other disciplines, and both are associated with wrong naming and confusion with other dyes. The criteria for certification have been published in Biotechnic & Histochemistry. Vendors are encouraged to submit samples of these compounds.

The BSC will soon add two more dyes to the list: celestine blue and eriochrome cyanine R. Both can be used as substitutes for hemalum (alum-hematoxylin) and both are significant stains even when there is plenty of hematoxylin in the market.

Experimental An experimental is chosen when the material has either been purchased from another company or manufactured in-house.  The current material has not been certified by the Biological Stain Commission.  The experimental is requested if the material is in question as to its quality and is not intended for sale.  We will report the results to you however this material will not be recommended for resale by the BSC.

Re-Check Material that has previously been certified by the BSC and has a BSC dye code is often resold to other companies, had new lot numbers assigned, been repackaged and/or shipped to new locations.  As a quality check, a portion of this material is sent to the BSC for verification that it is the same as the certified material and can be traced to its certificate of analysis.

Our testing services can be itemized accordingly for each service you request from the table below.  The certifications are the only service subject to a poundage fee.  Labels can be ordered from companies that have had the material they possess either certified or re-checked.

PROCEDURE FOR DYE TESTING

Once the top portion of the form is completed, print it out and send to the Biological Stain Commission Assay Laboratory along with dye samples for testing.

       Biological Stain Commission Certification Form

3. Submit Sample: Send in the appropriate amount of sample dye along with the completed certification form. The quantities required for testing depend on the service requested:

   a. Certification:  TWO 10-gram bottles and ONE 5-gram bottle of dye along with certification form.

   b. Sample Recheck: ONE 5-gram sample of dye along with certification form.

   c. Experimental: ONE 5-gram sample of dye along with certification form.

4. Processing and Results: Once received at the laboratory testing will begin. Once completed, we will inform you of your results by mail.  You will receive the certification paperwork from the BSC which will indicate if your sample has met certification criteria. If the sample has passed, you will receive any labels that you requested.
